Town walkabout for construction of “Safety Map” in Toji-in Kitamachi

On 5 September, 2010 a town walkabout in Toji-in Kitamachi, Kyoto was held with a view to the creation of a safety map for use in disaster evacuation as a collaborative project run by the city (Kinugasa school district in Kata-ku) with Ritsumeikan University’s Research Center for Disaster Mitigation of Urban Cultural Heritage. Residents walked about their local neighborhoods noting aspects relevant to disaster evacuation, and drew up their observations on maps. The idea was to discover the strong and weak points of the area and to share any information gathered. The event represents the result of preparations over six months, including several town meetings and questionnaires to residents of Toji-in Kitamachi about evacuation and the usefulness of a safety map. The plan is to confirm the information submitted, print it and have a safety map delivered to every single home in the area.
